Óvár Castle – History and Exhibition Space

The castle of Magyaróvár was built on Roman foundations. The construction of the present-day castle began in 1364. During the 16th and 17th centuries, it endured several sieges and periods of destruction, and by the 18th century it had lost its military significance. In 1766, Maria Theresa granted the estate to her daughter, Archduchess Maria Christina.

By 1818, it had acquired its present form, and higher education in agricultural sciences was established within its walls, continuing uninterrupted to this day. Since 1953, the building has been under national monument protection, and today it is the only castle in Hungary that houses a functioning university faculty.

The Castle and Institutional History Exhibition on the ground floor presents more than 200 years of the castle’s and the university faculty’s history through interactive tools, organized into three distinct sections.

Hanság Museum

The next attraction is the Hanság Museum in Mosonmagyaróvár, which, with its 102-year history, ranks among the oldest established museums in Hungary. The association that founded the museum was established in 1882 under the name “Historical and Archaeological Society of Moson County.”

Following the establishment of the National Centre of Museums and Monuments, the institution became state-owned in 1950 under the name Hanság Museum, and from 1962 onward it operated under the supervision of the Győr-Sopron County Museum Directorate, and in 1982 it expanded with the city’s oldest listed historic building – the so-called Cselley House – which houses the applied arts exhibition, the Roman-era lapidarium, and the Gyurkovich Collection.

Cselley House

The city’s oldest residential building stands on the baroque-style Main Street of Magyaróvár. Its name preserves that of the family who were its last owners. Among them, Kálmán Cselley, a notary public, also served as chairman of the museum construction committee.

The beauty of this medieval residence was revealed through reconstruction following heritage excavations carried out in the 1970s. Its iron-grilled wooden balconies and richly carved stone-framed windows suggest a late Gothic, early Renaissance townhouse. The medieval atmosphere is further evoked by the remnants of plaster in the gateway passage, where signatures in black and red chalk, children’s drawings, and a faded sketch of a castle tower can be seen. The Baroque statue of Saint Roch located in the gateway was originally one of the subsidiary figures of the sculptural group that now stands in Deák Square.
